| | Today I played a gig with my largest audience to date. I played for a
classroom of 20 2nd graders. It was their 100th day of school
celebration and to help them celebrate I wrote a song about 100 things
I liked and went to their classroom to sing it.
I was actually more nervous about singing in front of kids than I was
adults. Kids are brutally honest. To my suprise, they loved the song,
payed very close attention to it and demanded I sing it not once, but 3
times. By the 3rd time they had parts memorized and were singing along
with me. I had them raise their hand everytime I sang about something
they liked. It was like a non stop wave of hands for 3 minutes.
Later that night my friend who teaches the class brought me a bunch of
thank you cards the kids made me out of construction paper. It was
without a doubt the single coolest thing I have ever recieved. If I had
enough magnets I would hang them all on my fridge.
There was one line of the song that went "I like fast cars and I like
pretty girls". To which all the boys in the class yelled,
"EEEEEWWWWWW!" and someone called me a wuss.
One of the cards read "Dear JR. Thank you for singing to us. P.S. Don't sing "I love girls" anymore. From: Nathan".
Yeah, I think I'm gonna redirect my focus to writing songs for little
kids. They are much more fun than ex girlfriends, heart break and all
that other drivel that fills up songs.
After the "show" my friend told me that the school does not have a
music program so the kids were amazed to see me sing and play. I feel
bad for them not having music so I'm going to go back for the
Valentine's Day party and I'm going to let them help me write a song in
the spirit of love. Seeing as how they are all 2nd graders and most of
them despise love I imagine it won't be your traditional love song but
I'm anticipating a line that goes something like, "I don't like love.
I'd rather eat a bug then let a girl give me a hug."
Yeah, that song is gonna rule. We are also gonna make shoebox guitars.
I went into the wrong profession. I want to be a teacher now. Kids are
awesome. I asked the Principal if they were needing someone to teach
Recess because I am sooooo good at recess. Sadly, I must keep my
current job for now, as there is no Recess Teacher position at this
time. Doh.
